JARROTTS have, for many years, been the name for high quality, crystal clear prints of historic motor racing images. Their range has been carefully nurtured and expanded over the years, as worthy negatives have come to light and added to the core collection.
Since Martin and Lizzie Jordan took the reigns, a further injection of enthusiasm has seen the company move to an all together higher plain and their activities are now hitting new heights. January 2007 sees them add the acclaimed Lionel Clegg Archive to their list of available photographs. The core of this collection formed the back-bone of both Guy Loveridge’s Award Winning 2001 title 'Mintex Man' and its 2006 follow up 'Mintex Man - Relined'. Martin said 'We are very excited by the prospect of handling the Lionel Clegg photographs. Clegg was clearly a passionate photographer as well as motor racing enthusiast! His job allowed him to get into places and take shots that are, to my mind, utterly unique.'
This will be the first time that Lionel Clegg’s pictures have been commercially available, and they 'slot' into the JARROTTS line-up very well. Each of Clegg’s photographs was taken in the course of his work for Mintex Brakes and Clutch Linings from 1952 through to 1964. They focus upon Le Mans during those years and the British Grand Prix of 1953. All of the known drives of the era feature - Fangio, Hawthorn, Moss, Collins, Salvadori, Parnell, Hamilton, Rolt etc as well as less commonly seen figures like Villoresi, Farina, Wharton, Bueb, Stewart, ‘Dunlop Mac’, ‘Ginger’ Devlin of Coopers and Ferrari mechanic Parenti. The strengths of the collection lies in it being in glorious colour, a rare thing from this era, and the crispness of each shot. Loveridge says 'I have always been amazed, right from my introduction to the collection back in the early 1990’s, by the clarity and definition of Lionel’s work. I know that he used professional quality cameras and the best available 'Kodachrome' stock, but his ability to capture the moment whilst, presumably, working at the same time, is impressive to say the least! I am delighted that JARROTTS have decided to take on the collection. For it to now be available to a wide audience, who can not only have a copy of the book, but also own one of the images and put it on their wall, continues Lionel’s interest, and shares the passion he so clearly felt for his work in Motor Sport.'
The Lionel Clegg images will be 'breaking cover' on the JARROTTS web site - www.jarrotts.com- in the very near future, and enthusiasts will have the chance to view the images in the 'flesh' at Stoneleigh’s ‘RaceRetro’ event between 23rd and 25th March, where JARROTTS will be having their customary stand, and Guy Loveridge will be on hand to chat about the pictures, as well as to sign copies on 'Mintex Man - RELINED' during the course of the show. Later in the summer, the Clegg photographs will also be on sale with JARROTTS at both Goodwood events.
